Resistance to Blackleg and Tuber Soft Rot in Interspecific Somatic Hybrids between S. brevidens and S. tuberosum (¢¥ Superior ¢¥ , ¢¥ Dejima ¢¥ , and Dihaploid of ¢¥ Superior ¢¥)

Abstract
The somatic hybrid plants produced by the protoplast fusion between Solanum brevidens and several clones of S. tuberosum (¢¥Superior¢¥, ¢¥Dejima¢¥, and dihaploid of ¢¥Superior¢¥) were screened for resistance to blackleg and tuber soft rot by inoculating either Pectobacterium carotovorum ssp. carotovorum or Pectobacterium carotovorum ssp. atrocepticum.. S. brevidens was resistant to bacterial soft rot, whereas S. tuberosum fusion parents, ¢¥Dejima¢¥ and ¢¥Superior¢¥, were susceptible. The inoculated tubers and stems of S. tuberosum typically had softly macerated areas around the inoculation. In contrast, tubers and stems of somatic hybrids usually localized wound response at the site of inoculation. The somatic hybrids showed high levels of resistant to soft rot and blackleg caused by Pectobacterium carotovorum ssp. carotovorum or Pectobacterium carotovorum ssp. atrocepticum.
